Worship at SIPC
Christian worship joyfully ascribes all praise and honor, glory and power to the triune God. In worship we acknowledge God present in the world and in our lives. As we respond to God's claim and redemptive action in Jesus Christ, we are transformed and renewed. In worship we offer ourselves to the Lord and are equipped for God's service in the world. At SIPC, all are welcomed to worship the Lord: families and singles, young and old, teenagers and children. We all belong to Jesus.
In spite of the diversity among Reformed churches, you will find the following characteristices at SIPC that emphasize our tradition:
1. A focus on community: The Reformed tradition understands the church as a rigorously maintained community that takes seriously the church as people covenanted together; the people who are responsible for one another, and worship is never a private matter.
2. The involvement of the people: The singing of the people has always been a thrilling event, and the singing of hymns and offering responses continues to be the people's major role in worship.
3. Simplicity: The focus of attention in Reformed worship is on the Word of God rather than on persons or objects.
4. The combination of Word and sacrament: The Reformed understanding of the sacraments as the enactment or sealing of the Word means that the Lord's Supper stands alongside the preached Word. Both bear testimony to Jesus Christ, the living Word.
5. The importance of the Psalms: Early Reformed Protestants were known for their knowledge of and love for the Psalms. The Psalms continue to represent the deepest spirituality of the Scriptures.
6. Adaptability: The Reformed tradition has always welcomed change. Churches are free to experiment with new forms of worship when they are sufficiently grounded in a faith that keeps them from becoming vapid. (From Reformed Worship by Howard L. Rice and James C. Huffstutler)
Visitors are always welcome at SIPC and continue to be a significant part of who we are as a community of faith. You will find worship services at Sea Island guided by the Book of Common Worship as they reflect our spiritual roots in places like Scotland, Ireland, Switzerland, and Jerusalem. You are invited to worship with us on Sunday mornings at 8:30am, 10:30am and Sunday Evenings at 5:00pm. Child-care is provided. |
