2008 Mission Yearbook: For Prayer and Study

Highlighted is the Presbytery of Northumberland in Pennsylvania, a presbytery of 45 churches and 5,632 members and a supporter of 15 church mission trips a year. A recent work group just completed a mission trip to the western highlands of Honduras working in the the hills outside of Chalmeca - 4 intense days of digging trenches through a cornfield, up 60-degree slopes, from one mango tree to another, connecting eight homes with clean water. How do you dig a four-kilometer trench? You dig it by shovel. How do you extend the kingdom of God? You extend it by hand. The Mission Yearbook can be ordered through the church office by calling the church office at 525-0696.

SIPC is a Congregation involved in the Community, the Nation, and the World

SIPC has made mission trips to New York City (working with 17 different volunteer organizations), Piedras Negras, Mexico (building a house in 5 days) in support of Constructores Para Cristo, and participated in mission trips to Haiti working with the Northwest Haiti Christian Mission. We have supported the first Presbyterian missionaries to Nepal, and presently support a missionary family with Arab World Ministries in Amman, Jordan, and a missionary family in Thailand.

In addition to serving as a Business Partner with the Port Royal Elementary School (helping disadvantaged children), and working closely with the Department of Social Services in assisting families with special need, SIPC continues to support the ecumenical ministry of HELP of Beaufort, and other local agencies that provide emergency aid.

Through the work of Aaron Miller and the Mission Committee and Barbara Thomas, Executive Director of Habitat, SIPC is actively engaged in supporting the mission of Habitat for Humaity, a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization driven by the desire to give tangible expression to the love of God through the work of eliminating poverty housing. Habitat's mission and methods are derived from a few key theological concepts: The necessity of putting faith into action, the 'Economics of Jesus,' and 'The Theology of the Hammer.'

SIPC and Habitat are active and at work in the Greater Beaufort area. Members and friends of the church work with others to make dreams come true. Join us the first Tuesday of each month as we organize gifts, time, and energy to build simple, decent, affordable houses in partnership with those who lack adequate shelter. Various groups and committees meet for approximately one hour. And then, we combine our efforts on the third Saturday of each month to finish the construction of the Faith House in downtown Beaufort.

An Apostles Build is a true demonstration of the Theology of the Hammer, a phrase coined by HFHI founder Millard Fuller. 'We can set our differences aside and use a hammer as an instrument to manifest God's love.' What is An Apostles Build? This type of partnership allows twelve individual churches to join together to fully fund and build a house with a local family. As Jesus' original apostles were charged with spreading the word about Jesus, twelve apostle churches are charged with Habitat's mission to provide decent shelter for God's children. SIPC is 1 of 12 area churches committed to this work. See Aaron Miller or Jack Fritze for details.
